Art is one of the best ways to express what we see around us. People have always tried to express themselves in different ways: through writing novels, poems and songs, through creating hand-made items and paintings. There are many art works by famous artists which are visually attractive. Most of them are kept at the Louvre, the Hermitage, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the Tretyakov Gallery, the British Museum and some other world-famous museums. Some works cost a fortune. For example, Paul Cezanne’s painting “The Card Players” costs more than 200 millions of US dollars. However, my favourite artist is William Turner. He is a well-known English painter, who mostly created romantic landscapes. He was only 12 years old when he started drawing. His childish sketches are still preserved in the British Museum. At the age 21 he began exhibiting his works at the Royal Academy. Most of those works were water-colours and oil paintings. Turner was a real traveler. He visited France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, but he never lost interest in his own country. As a landscaper, he was mainly interested in light and colour effects. One of his famous paintings is even called “Light and Colour”. All his works are highly praised by critics. Turner died in London in 1851. His paintings are considered to be the property of the British nation. Among Russian artists I especially admire Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov. They are both considered to be outstanding Russian masters of art. Ilya Repin was mostly interested in historical and political events of his motherland, which he expressed in the paintings. He created the portraits of some outstanding figures, among them Tolstoy, Mussorgsky, Pirogov. Valentin Serov also painted some famous people, including Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Isaac Levitan, Sawa Mamontov. His most famous works “The Girl with Peaches” and “The Girl in the Sunlight” can be seen in the Tretyakov Gallery.

THE BRITISH PAINTERS (JOSEPH MALLORD WILLIAM TURNER)

William Turner, a great romantic English landscape painter, was born in Devonshire in 1775. He lived with his uncle in Middlesex, where he began to attend school. His first drawings are dated 1787, when he was only twelve years of age. His childish sketch-books, filled with drawings, are still preserved in the British Museum.

When he was 21, he began to exhibit oil paintings as well as water-colours at the Royal Academy. The first, «Fishermen at Sea» is now in the Gate Gallery.

He traveled much in France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy. But he never lost his interest in his own country.

As a landscape painter Turner was interested mainly in light and colour effects. One of his famous paintings is even called «Light and Colour». His work is highly praised by great critics.

Turner died in London in 1851. His pictures and drawings became the property of the British nation.

William Turner is considered to be one of the world greatest painters.

I would like to tell you about my favourite painters. I am very fond of impressionism, and especially like the works of Monet. Classicism attached the main importance to composition and figure painting. Romantism laid stress on personal and emotional expression.

In its turn impressionism showed the moments of life, parts of human existence. It was one of the most interesting and unusual trends in modern painting. It started in the 60s of the 19th century and the most famous impressionists were French painters Renoir, Degas, Manet, Monet, Pissaro and Sisley. They added some freshness and spontaneity of perception of life to the painting. This kind of perception was quite unusual even for that time, and impressionists were not accepted as anew school. First they were thought to be a group of painters of some unusual style. Their works were not admitted to the exhibitions. But some critics paid their attention to them, and they were able to show their works.

The most famous of Monet's works are: "The Ruan Cathedral in the Morning", "The Ruan Cathedral in the Afternoon", "The Ruan Cathedral in the Evening", "Haystacks" and others. He created the feeling of glittering sunshine, of subject dissolved in the vibration of light and air. He showed moments of life, subjects in different times of the day. His colours are very soft and delicate, his paintings are always full of air and light. They seem very alive to me.

By developing their own style of painting these painters opened a new school in the history of modern art.

Easter — it’s a big religious holiday, because Christians celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The date of celebrating changes every year.

It falls on one of spring Sundays. Seven weeks before Easter — it is the Lent. People must not eat the animal products and meal 7 weeks.

People prepare for the celebration during the last week, which we name Holy Week. Of course, the customs related with this day are different in every country.

For example, Easter Cakes and Easter eggs are the traditional food in several countries. Women bake Easter Cake on Friday, this day was called Good (or Holy) Friday.

It’s really an important day for many Christians, because Jesus Christ was crucified on this day. Jesus’ sacrifice was made for us. It’s a day when people say the prayers of thanksgiving and sing solemn hymns.

On Saturday women dye the eggs. Red color is traditional color of eggs, but this tradition changed a little bit.

Nowadays we can see on the Easter table the eggs of different colors. In the Saturday evening, Christian people go to church. The Easter mass lasts all night.

The priest consecrates the food in the morning. People go home for breakfast after the ceremony. The first food that they eat is the blessed food.

It is the time, when relatives visits each other.

On July 4, 1776, a group of rebels representing the Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic ocean coast in North America signed a document. It stated that these colonies had the right to be free and independent. The document is known as the Declaration of Independence. July 4 is celebrated by Americans as a national holiday — Independence Day.

There is a building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which is called Independence Hall. Here the Declaration was signed. On the building there is a famous Liberty Bell, which rang to tell the happy people in the streets that a new country had been born. But Britain did not agree with this fact until 1783. That year the American colonists won in the war of Independence with Britain.

Americans think about and treat their flag with respect. In American schools the Flag day begins with solemn ceremony of raising the flag.
